Activities

Over the years, TOBSPA has been organizing activities for the development of the Scouts and Filipino youth, in general.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

Financial Literacy Program

Relevant to the current times, the financial literacy program aims to provide Scouts with knowledge in proper handling or resources, encourage thriftiness and inculcate in them the value of saving for the future.  This will also make the Scouts aware of the potential to improve their financial capacity.

The program will be implemented by utilizing non-traditional techniques to capture their interests and to effectively convey the message that it intends to impart.  Consultations with Senior Scouts are being undertaken to fully understand their needs and concerns regarding the subject matter.

This program will be conducted in partnership with the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP).

Community-Based Scouting

To introduce more children to the opportunities in Scouting, TOBSPA will involve itself in the development of various community-based Scouting units.  To implement the program, the association will partner with selected foundations for the youth and child-caring institutions.

Under this program, TOBSPA will organize the community-based Scouting unit in coordination with the management of the chosen foundation.  They will undergo a series of basic learning and training modules with the assistance of the foundation’s staff and volunteers who will also be trained to become professional Scouters.  After the preliminary activities and investiture, the Scouting unit will be turned-over to the Local Council and will be integrated in its area of jurisdiction.

The program will be implemented in partnership with the Boy Scouts of the Philippines National Office and the Local Councils.

PAST ACTIVITIES

Social Accountability Module

Social Accountability Module is the first of its kind, thematic outdoor activity-based module made available for young people ages from 12 to 17 years old, male and female, primarily designed for the 26TH Asia Pacific Regional Scout Jamboree in Mt. Makiling, Laguna, Philippines on December 28, 2009 until January 3, 2010.

The module was designed and implemented by the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines Association (TOBSPA) in cooperation with the host NSO, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) in partnership with the Affiliated Network for Social Accountability in East Asia and the Pacific (ANSA-EAP), a joint program between Ateneo School of Government and the World Bank.

The module is a dynamic interaction between Scouts and the community.  It provides fresh ideas, and learning opportunity for young people to have greater involvement in the development of the community through Social Accountability. It is a benchmark monitoring initiative among Scouts to improve governance at the community level.  This includes community immersion activities that will focus on four (4) key sectors to include (i) Health, (ii) Environment, (iii) Public Infrastructure, and (iv) Education.

To implement the module, TOBSPA partnered with the local government of Los Baños, Laguna for the community immersion in its five (5) barangays.

The school supplies were donated by Bonakid Pre-School and Promil Pre-School and partly subsidized by the funds raised during the Grand TOBS Homecoming last October 1.  The activity was implemented with the assistance of Senior Scouts from Roosevelt College Rodriguez in Rizal.

Senior Scout Youth Congress and Boy Scout Summit

Quality Scouting is a function of quality membership and quality membership, in turn, is a product of effective training programs.  In the past decade, there had been calls for fresh ideas to revitalize and rejuvenate the Scouting program.  In response to that call, the Senior Scout Youth Congress and the Boy Scout Summit were conceptualized and piloted successfully in the 14th National Scout Jamboree in October 2007.  These gatherings were the Scouts’ venue for reflection and brainstorming, which will hopefully lead to a Scouting program that is more relevant in contemporary times and more responsive to the needs of the new generation of two million Scouts in the Philippines.

Governance Camp

Good governance is considered too abstract a concept to the youth and corruption is believed to be an exclusively adult matter.  This explains why the youth sector remains indifferent to, sometimes clueless about, and worst of all, tolerant of, existing corruption in their midst.  The TOBSPA, desiring to take advantage of the unlocked potential of the youth, especially the Scouts in the social accountability advocacy, launched the Governance Camp for Emerging Anti-Corruption Scout Crusaders (GovCamp).

Fifty Scouts from all over Luzon underwent a week-long program in July 2007 at the Philippine Scouting Center for Asia-Pacific, Mt. Makiling, Los Baños, Laguna, where they were exposed to governance issues, and were equipped with the basic leadership and management tools to implement related initiatives at the local level.

The GovCamp was implemented with funding assistance from the Partnership for Transparency Fund (PTF).
