TOBSPA Congratulates and Weclomes TOBS 2011

The Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines Association congratulates and welcomes this year’s roster of outstanding Boy Scouts into its ranks. The following Scouts compose batch 2011 of the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines: Gian Lee Carlo G. Quiban of Abra Council; Miguel Ricardo R. Leung of Baguio City Council; Henry Jefferson Morco of Manila Council; Marius Lorenzo U. Marquez of Oriental Mindoro Council; Arnel M. Arevalo of Rizal Council; Adrian Justin del Rosario of City of Santa Rosa Council; Cyprian Jade Basa of Capiz Council; and Nino Christopher A. Cardenas, Ezekiel S. Majan and Markus C. Balsicas of Cebu Council.

The 2011 National Search for the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines has proven to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for each of its 25 finalists. Despite storm signals over Manila and an obstructive flood around the area, the Search pushed through.

Perhaps the most dreaded moment for the finalists is the final interview. There was an uneasy silence as each of the finalists braced for his rare chance to appear before the panel of judges and put his best foot forward. Called one by one, interviewees were led to and from the room to keep them from communicating with others, making the situation increasingly tense for the last people to be called.

At night, the scouts attended sessions under the wing of the TOBSPA, which ten of them would soon be joining. They helped our finalists practice for the interview, drilled them in formation, and assisted them in establishing a batch organization. More importantly, the Association facilitated the GAWAD Maximino J. Edralin, Jr.

Awarding Day came, with its expectations and surprises. After what seems to be the most bittersweet lunch of the entire stay, the finalists began to pack their things. Later while the ten were inducted into the TOBSPA, others were free to go home.

TOBSPA hails BSP’s 75th anniversary

The Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines Association Inc. (TOBSPA) salutes the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) as it celebrates its 75th year in promoting among the youth love of God, country and fellowmen, and preparedness to be responsible leaders for nation building through proper training programs courses under the supervision of competent Adult Leaders.

Scouting was founded by Lord Baden-Powell in 1907 in England. It reached the Philippine soils through the efforts of the American soldiers. Documents show that Scouting was already existing as early as 1912, and the very first Philippine troop was already formed by 2nd Lieutenant Sherman L. Kiser in Zamboanga in 1914.The BSP was officially chartered in 1936, through the stewardship of Colonel Joseph E.H. Stevenot by virtue of Commonwealth Act No. 111.

The seven Charter Members and Founding Fathers of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines are Joseph Emile H. Stevenot, Arsenio N. Luz, Carlos P. Romulo, Gen. Vicente Lim, Judge Manuel R. Camus, Jorge B. Vargas and Gabriel A. Daza. On Januray 1, 1938, the inauguration of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines was held in front of the Legislative Building in Manila, with Exequiel Villacorta as Chief Scout Executive and Severino V. Araos as Deputy Chief Executive. In 1954, the BSP initiated its first National Scout Jamboree in Balara. In 1955, the well- known National Headquarters of the BSP at Conception Street, Manila was inaugurated. Twenty-three years after the establishment of the BSP, the Philippines was acknowledged worldwide through the hosting of the 10th World Scout Jamboree in Los Baños, Laguna.

Roland Carreon TOBS ’06 represents BSP in International Camp

A total of 97 National Scout Organizations participated in the 2nd International Peace Camp in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from September 20 to 29, 2011. It was the first time that the World Organization of the Scout Movement staged a peace-focused camp which was “primarily aimed at promoting world peace through inter-cultural dialogue,” said Saudi Education Minister Prince Faisal bin Abdullah.

The Boy Scouts of the Philippines, one of the top performing NSO’s in the region, was represented by the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines Association, Inc. (TOBSPA), through Scout Roland Dane Z. Carreon, TOBS 2006.
